"A BUILDER PASSES ON: Estevan owes much to the memory of PETER CUTHBERT DUNCAN, whose death occurred at Toronto on Monday. When he came West from Brandon almost 50 years ago there was nothing here but a section house and a cluster of settlers' tents to break of the sprawling prairies. It took rugged optimism to accept the challenge of those lonely acres and set about the building of a new town, a new centre of civilization. P.C. Duncan had rugged optimism, and he had strength of purpose. Out of the ranks of the pioneers he emerged as a leader in community enterprise, an astute business man, and a firm believer in the future of the town in whose creation he had played such a vital part. When the occasion arose he assumed civic responsibility. He became magistrate, coroner. He took the initiative in encouraging the boys and girls, and the oldest athletic trophy at Estevan Collegiate is one that he donated. He built a substantial home, and his good wife and his talented family contributed much to the community fabric. In short, from the day he first set foot in Estevan he not only accepted citizenship, he sought it. It is of such stuff that good towns are made, and Estevan pauses this week to achnowledge gratefully and sturdy and enduring handiwork of P.C. Duncan."

1916

Thea earliest Collegiate Echoes we found were dated 1916. THey were hand written by the Editor and were ready every other Friday at Literary periods.

In 1916 Ed Elford Dickson was Editor of Collegiate paper. His comment on World News of 48 years ago was how President Wilson's election in U.S.A. was favorable to the Allies in World War 1. The editor's current Canadian news mentioned the possible resignation of Sir Sam Hughes as Minister of Militia. THe editor then gave Collegiate news - such as "Emmet Kinna left on Friday to spend the winter in Texas. Mr. Armstrong, Clarence Duncan and George Campbell spent last weekend in Regina at a Y.M.C.A. Convention. The Collegiate students raised $175. for the Belgian Relief by taking part in a public entertainment. THe Executive of the Literary under Miss Rogers' direction prepared parcels for - the former students now in teh army. The parcels would be appreciated as Christmas boxes". In 1916 the name of the paper was selected from suggested names given by students. However, the editor stopped here - it is quite safe to assume the name "Echoes" started after that.

We have pictured some of our outstanding athletes and we have listed all the outstanding scholars, so now we will remind you of a few of our outstanding teachers.

As our first choice, because she was the favorite teacher of so many generations, and because she stood all the tests of time, we wish to pay tribute to Miss Rattray. You have heard of school pets, well she was certainly ours. Although we have long forgotten those old grammar, composition, and literature lessons she must have taught us -- for example such a thing as the iambic pentametre line of poetry, or that other seemingly incomprehensible thing called the dangling participle; yet we have never entirely forgotten her lessons on manners, fairness and decency. Her lessons were taught by the best of all possible methods, that of being a model and example to us. Her gentle manner and ladylike ways set the tone for our school.

We feel that Miss Rattray's influence was the greatest and the most lasting influence. We always felt that Miss Rattray belonged to us, that is, to Estevan. As students, we knew her before we came into the Collegiate; we could expect her to be there all our years, whereas our other teachers seemed to come "from far away places with strange sounding names". And just as she belonged to us so did we belong to her. Her interest in each and all of us we knew was genuine and sincere because youngsters are the first to see through any insincerity, pretense or affection.

We hope to see Miss Rattray at our Jubilee. She will make us all feel young again because to us we are all her "boys and girls". Miss Rattray is living in retirement at the West Coast and this is her present address: #103, 2707 Estevan Avenue, Victoria, B.C.
