Bibliographic Format for Research Papers

You must use the correct format when writing a bibliography. The author’s name, the title and the date must be included as well as other details. Different kinds of sources are entered differently. Following are sample bibliographic citations for various kinds of material.

Authors - Always list the author first, if there is one given. If there are 2 or 3 authors, list them all. Put the surname first for the first author, but not for the others (Green, Robert, Jane M. Brown, and Martin Black.). If there are more than 3 authors, write down the first one, followed by et al (Smith, John et al.).

Book -

Abley, Mark.  The Ice storm.  Toronto:  McClelland & Stewart, 1998. (Author.  Title.  Place of publication: Publisher, date.)

Book without author -

Nato handbook. Brussels: Nato Office of Information and Press, 1995.

Book with 2 authors -

MacDonald, Jake and Shirley Sandrel.  Faces of the flood.  Toronto:  Stoddart, 1997.

Article in an anthology -

Anthologies are collections of articles by different authors. Books like the Opposing Viewpoints or Current Issues series are anthologies, and must be cited differently than single-author books.

Internet - Web Sites should have author (if given), page title, site title, date of publication or update (if available) name of associated institution, date of access, and the URL (electronic address).

Online Database such as Infotrac or E-Library -

Online databases have print sources available online. Both the print source and the online source must be cited.

Articles from library subscription services (databases) are cited just like  print articles with the addition of the name of the database underlined, the name of the service, the library, the date of access, and URL if known.

Remember to use the correct format and punctuation, including a period at the end of the entry.

Arrange the entries in alphabetical order according to the first word in each entry (except for a, an or the).
