HISTORY OF ECS

Discussions for a new Estevan high school which would provide course options for students of all interests and abilities commenced in 1964.  Approval in principle for the Estevan Comprehensive School was granted by the Provincial Government on February 10, 1967. The firm of Kerr, Collingworth and Riches was contracted as the architects.

A formal agreement was signed between the Estevan Collegiate Board, the Estevan School Unit Board and the Estevan Separate School Board on October 1, 1967 to officially form the Estevan School Board.

The school opened for classes on September 18, 1969. Construction, however, was not completed until December of that year.  The Principal was Mr. Edward F. Lucotch.

Estevan Comprehensive School opened as a non-semestered school offering courses at the grade 10, 11 and 12 levels, with a staff of 51 teachers and 650 students.  By the end of the first year it became evident that there was a need for greater flexibility in student timetabling in order to give students better access to the more than 100 courses offered in the school.  At the beginning of the 1970-71 school year the school moved to a semester system.

Grade 9 courses were added in the 1990-91 school year and grade 9 students from Estevan and many of the surrounding rural communities now attend ECS.  Approximately 900 students are currently enrolled in ECS.
