DIEPPE

BY MYRA SMITH, INDIAN HEAD

They came at dawn to the coastal town
With the shining eyes of youth,
They faced the guns of the startled Huns,
And showed the world that Canada's sons
Are true to the cause of truth.

They crossed the sands of the old resort
And they climbed the guarded hill,
They sought the foe in the pits below
And face to face they let them know
That justice is living still.

They looked on death but they found no time
For the luxury of grief;
The boats withdrew with a grim-faced crew
To see what job they next could do,-
The men of the Maple Leaf.

Before a shrine in the Hall of Peace
We shall come with reverent step,
And think with pride of the ones who died
To push the gates of freedom wide,-
The heroes who stormed Dieppe.
