Reuben Ashenhurst, late of Sardis, B.C., passed away January 27, 1985, at the age of 86 years. Mr. Ashenhurst was born in Wiarton, Ontario on April 23, 1898. As a child, he came to Manitoba with his parents and lived in the Deloraine area until 1911 when the family moved to Estevan, Sask.
While a yound man, he lived at Shand, Sask., working in the coal mine and he was also employed at various other coal mines in the district. In 1945, he moved to the Abbotsford-Chilliwack, B.C. area and had since resided there, while working as a mechanic. He is survived by his wife, Ruby; four daughters, Bernice, Myrtle, Margaret and Shirley; two sons, Gerald and Darwin; 15 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Czoba of Estevan, Sask. He was predeceased by one brother, William, in 1976. Funeral services were held Jan. 30, 1985 at Henderson's Funeral Home, Chilliwack, B.C. with Rev. Del Marsten officiating.
Frank Doll Sr., age 95 years, passed away February 10, 1972 at Leamington Hospital, Ontario, late of 65 Pearl Street, Kingsville.
Dear father of Sister Cyrilla S.S.J., Nazareth, Mich., Amelia (Mrs. Victor James), Spartanburg, S.C., Reverend Fr. Fred Doll, Marcus and Frank Jr., all of Kingsville. Nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
Resting at the John B. Ferguson Funeral Home, 91 Division Street, Kingsville. Prayers were said on Friday, February 11th at 8:00p.m. Funeral mass was Saturday, February 12 at 11:00a.m., at St. John de Brebeuf Church, Kingsville with interment in Greenhill Cemetery. Mr. Frank Doll was a farmer who lived seven miles east of Estevan from 1912 to 1937. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Estevan. He will be remembered by many friends in Estevan and area.
Mrs. Margaret Czoba, late of Estevan, passed away Sunday, October 13, 1991 at the age of 89 years.
Born October 8, 1902 at Whitewater, Manitoba, the only daughter of William and Leutia Ashenhurst. She came to the Estevan area in 1911 with her parents and spent most of her life at Shand. On February 4, 1921 she was married to Frank Czoba in the United Church manse in Estevan. In 1928 they moved to a farm near Shand where they lived until Frank passed away. In 1978 Margaret came to live at Creighton Lodge in Estevan and spent 10 years there before going to the Estevan Regional Nursing Home in 1988.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband Frank in 1971; also by two brothers, William Ashenhurst in 1976 and Reuben Ashenhurst in 1985. She is survived by two daughters, Alice (Jack) Pawson, and Helen Czoba, Estevan; one son, Kenneth, Estevan; three grandchildren, Bob(Dianne) Pawson, Calgary; Don Pawson, Prince Albert, Sask., and Lori (Rick) Spenrath, Brownvale, Alta; four great granddaughters, Amie, Heather and Robyn Pawson, Calgary; Alexandra Spenrath of Brownvale; sister-in-law Ruby Ashenhurst of Sardis, B.C.; and several nieces and one nephew in B.C.
The funeral service was held Thursday, October 17, 1991 from the Chapel of the Orsted Funeral Home, Estevan with Rev. L. Kennedy officiating. Interment in the Souris Valley Memorial Gardens.
Funeral service for Mr. George Edward Dodd, late of Estevan was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 3rd, 1992 from St. Paul's United Church, Estevan, with Reverend L. Kennedy officiating. Interment followed at Souris Valley Memorial Gardens, Estevan. George passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 1992 at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 84 years. George was born on September 25, 1907 at Roche Percee, Sask. to Leonard and Anne Dodd. George came from a large family of four girls and five boys. He received his education at Shand. When George was 13 years old he went with his brother, Leonard to work in the mines. This was in the 1930's, the older children went out to work to help feed the rest of the family. On June 27, 1940 George enlisted in the S.S.R. and left for overseas and landed in Scotland on Christmas Eve. He was in the invasion of Normandy where he was wounded and hospitalized for three to four months. George returned home in 1945.
George then worked at Estevan Brick for 13 years quitting due to ill health. For a number of years he took on light work at the Post Office as janitor and caretaker for the Canadian Legion. He again had to quit because of his health. George made his home with his brother, Leonard and his wife, Frances in Estevan. George was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Estevan No. 60. George loved fishing and being outdoors.
George was survived by his sister-in-law, Frances Dodd, Estevan; two sisters, Ethel Dodd, Estevan and Mary Sheetz, Langley, B.C.; one step-sister, Anne (Oris) Cooley, Estevan; four step-brothers, Walter(Lillian), Willie, Gilbert Densley, Estevan and Arthur (Florence) Densley, Saskatoon. Also many nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by his parents, Leonard and Anne Dodd; his step-father, George Densley; one brother, Leonard Dodd; one step-sister, Doris Olson. Pallbearers were Ted Lindgren, John Stovin, Henry Lagberg, Jack Leniczek, Ed Walton and Bert Blondeau. Honour guard was formed by Legion members.
Funeral arrangements were in care of the Orsted Funeral Home, Estevan.
Jonas Gustaf Peterson, 78, coal mine and brickyard operator and farmer of the Shand and Estevan districts for 45 years, passed away last Thursday, April 15.
Born on August 22, 1869 in Smoland, Sweden, he came to New London, Minnesota, in 1889. In 1903 he came to Estevan where he operated the former Eureka Brick Yard. A few years later he opened a coal mine and brickyard at Shand and operated these until depression years. The name of J.G. Peterson was synonymous with that of Shand and the reputation and demand for the products from the Shand Brickyard and coal mine was widespread.
In recent years Mr. Peterson had devoted his efforts to his farming operations near Shand. He was married on April 25, 1917, to Lyda Campbell of Campbellton, N.B. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elna Willhight of North Bend, Washington, and Mrs. Irene Barchenger of Burtrum, Minnesota; and two sons, Grant and Warren of Regina, one brother and one sister in Sweden and two brothers in the U.S.A. Also surviving are five grandchildren. All members of the immediate family attended the funeral services.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's United Church, Estevan, Monday afternoon and were conducted by the Rev. F.H. Morgan, BD. Internment was made in Estevan cemetery. McNeil and Lee were in charge of arrangements.
