Estevan Greenhouses and Nurseries Ltd. were established in June 1930 by Estevan Greenhouses Ltd. With Walter Fichtermann, a fuly experienced florist as superintendent. The Company began with two green houses 250 x 36 feet with a large heating plant, house and garage with design rooms, cold rooms for flowers and office space. There were six acres of land under cultivation.
Mr. Fichtermann leased the property and business from the original company in 1944 and then operated under the name of Esetvan Greenhouses until 1961 when he incorporated it as Estevan Greenhouses and Nurseries Ltd.
A third greenhouse was built in 1955 and the number of acres under cultivation had increased to about twenty acres.
Fine cut flowers of many varieties are grown under glass, mainly snap dragons, ums, stocks, calla lillies, petunias, pansies, marigolds, and more.
The outdoor nursery stock consists of trees and shrubs and perennial flowers all suitable for the prarie climate as well as fruit trees and berries.
Each spring annual flowering plants for transplanting are grown, also potted nursery stock which can be planted at any time during the summer.
The company specializes in floral deisgns of all kinds. Mr. Fichtermann's arrangements have always displayed a high level artistic taste, and training his son Ron, developed similar talent him.
In 1966 Ron won the "Designer of the Year Award" for Saskatchewan and the Cup donated by Florist Trans-World Association. Thus gave him the privilege of entering in the international semi-finals of the same competition at Minneapolis. There, among the top designers of the northern half of the American continent, he won second place.
Estevan Greenhouses and Nurseries Ltd. employed a seasonable minimum of eight and a maximum of 35 people throughout the year.
A few years ago, Mr. Fichtermann sold the business to a local residnet, and he and Mrs. Fichtermann retired to Creighton Lodge. The business has since ceased operating.
