Memories of the Kingsford School District
#3546

Submitted by Kay Wilson

The first Kingsford school was built in 1916 by Henry Wilson. The first teacher was Mary McClement. Early schoolhouses were never locked. They were built close to a road and left open so that is anyone needed shelter, he could find it there. Many school districts kept a supply of food in the school so that the wayfarers might have not only shelter, but food. The school was located on the SE 25-3-7-W2nd M.

Kingsford School burned to the ground in 1941 and school was held in the kitchen of the Frank Henricksen home. The second school was built in 1941 by Ed Wilson, brother of the man who had built the first one many years before. He was assisted by Ed Hofley, a district resident.

Last year of operation for the school was the 1958-59 school year. The school had been incorporated into the Estevan School Unit #2 in the year 1945, and in 1959, the school bus transported the Kingsford school children to town school. Families from the north end, the Hirschs, the Chamneys and the Macks went to Lampman. Families from the Southend, Dillmans, Mehlers and Wilsons went to Bienfait. The end of an era! The end of local administration, the school board of three who did everything from hauling water - to putting up sheets for stage curtains before the Christmas Concert. Such fine men as Bill Chamney, Frank Henricksen, Jake Miller, Joe Mack and Valentine Dillman did much to make the atmosphere at Kingsford School a pleasant one.

Church services were held in the school by various ministers, Rev. Bitcon, Rev. Elliot among them - until the purchase of Albany School to be used as a United Church in Kingsford was made.
